The Samtavro Monastery

In the Royal Garden of Mtskheta, where Saint Nino used to live, King Mirian built a temple. He and his queen, Nana, are buried there as his will stated.

There is a small church in the yard of the Samtavro Monastery named after Saint Nino. This is where she first resided. The blackberry bush still flourishes there. The legend has it that the girl was hiding in the bush for quite a while.

In the X century, a new church was built in the name of Christ instead of the old temple. It harbors numerous holy goods. Supernatural frescos are found in the temple: the Holy Mother fresco of Iveria shed actual tears shortly before the revolution of 1917 and some chrism in 1990s. Samtavro was a fathers’ monastery at first, but it was closed due to harsh history. In the XIX century mothers’ monastery was founded here which is still active.

The yard of Samtavro has a tower, where a well known and appreciated monk – Father Gabriel used to reside. Even death could not stop his miracles. His grave has flourishing flowers all year round and the ever burning candle oil that still keeps curing people.

Ertguleba Charity Fund assisted the construction of Patriarch’s small residence on the monastery territory.
