Bethania Virgin Monastery of Monks

The Bethania Virgin Monastery is situated 17 km west from Tbilisi, in the forest surrounding the Vere River. “Bethania” is a Jewish word meaning “residence of the poor.”

The year of its foundation is unknown. However, the grave of the Noblemen from the Orbeliani family proves its existence in the XI century.

The main domed and cross shaped church, was built on the verge of XII-XIII centuries instead of the pre-existent brick church.

The northern wall of the church is adorned with frescoes of Georgian Kings: George III, King Tamar and Lasha-Giorgi.

Today, Bethania is a fully functioning monastery where monks happily recieve newcomers.

Ertguleba chairty fund donated 10 000 GEL for the reconstruction of the monastery.
