The Saint King Archil Monastery

The Monastery dedicated to the King Archil II was built in the region of village Nodokra. According to the history, the spot was occupied by the Virgin Cathedral which was built by the King himself, right by his residency. Archil II was buried here after he was sentenced to death by an Arab Caliph. King David the Builder and King Tamar are also thought to have lived here.

The complex comprised two basilicas; a five storied tower; a cellar with typical ancient design and living rooms.

The monastery ceased functioning in 1920s – 1930s as the Bolshevik organization Spartak blew it up.  The revival of the monastery began in the XIX century. The Virgin Cathedral was rebuilt in 2003 and the holy life was restored by the blessings of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia. The monastery has been stauropeagal since 2005. Today it is inhabited by priest Archil and one monk.

Thanks to Ertguleba Charity Fund fathers’ apartments were built here and the restoration of the tower was launched.  The monastery guest house was built as well as temples for Kings Archil and Luarsab. The old cellar was remodelled as well.
The building of the fence and the pool of holy water, as well as construction of comfortable road is still in the course of action.
